What do we mean by "progressive jackpot slots"? When referring to slot machines, the word "progressive" means that the jackpot size grows each time the slot machine is played. When somebody wins the jackpot, the prize returns to its original value (whatever is set by the casino).
A progressive slot machine's jackpot increases because it is programmed to save a portion of its earnings to the jackpot. For example, a progressive slot may set aside 10% of each bet put into it for the total jackpot. If it is a $1 slot machine, then every $3 bet will contribute $0.30 to the jackpot. A progressive slot machine's jackpot size is indicated by a live jackpot meter, so you will know how big it is.
Because a significant portion of a progressive slot's earnings is kept for the jackpot, the casino stands to get less money. To offset this problem, casinos make their progressive slots tighter than regular slots. In this way they make the same money (if not more) as they do from regular slots.

Progressive slot machines are not for everyone. Because they are tighter than regular slots, you risk more money playing them. Of course, the trade-off is you have a shot at winning more. On the other hand, you have to understand that smaller wins come less frequently here. Progressive slots, as we have said, need to be tighter or else the casino would lose money. If you like to play slots for the small but frequent wins, you should avoid progressives and stick with regular slots.
Some Tips and Hints for Progressive Slot Machines
- Play the highest jackpot you can find. Since the money is very large, a win will easily cover your losses and leave you with a whole lot more. The drawback is many other slot players will be playing for that same jackpot and someone can win it before you do.
- Always wager the maximum number of coins. Jackpots can only be won when max coins are wagered.
- Always bring plenty of identification cards, primary and secondary. Primary IDs are government-issued IDs such as driver's license and passport. (Be careful with your passport though if you are a tourist - get it photocopied and use the photocopy - keep the passport in your hotel room or a safe.) Secondary IDs include birth certificate, baptismal certificate and the like.
- Be patient. You will see far fewer winning spins when playing progressive slots.
- Bring sufficient funds. It will probably be a long wait before you hit the jackpot, if you do at all.
